Background Introduction to the GEI China Potential Unicorn List

Issuing Organization: Beijing Great Wall Enterprise Strategy Research Institute (Great Wall Strategic Consulting, GEI), the earliest official think tank in China to systematically research and publish lists of high-growth science and technology enterprises, including unicorns. It also served as the lead drafting unit for the national standard 'Classification Guide for High-Growth Enterprises' (GB/T 41464-2022), lending national-level regulatory endorsement to the list's criteria.

Since 2019, a cumulative total of 1,695 companies have been listed on the GEI China Potential Unicorn Enterprise List. With the exception of a few companies specializing in photoresists, most potential unicorn enterprises have demonstrated remarkable growth momentum, among which 56—such as Moore Threads and Biren Technology—have already gone public, while another 149—including Xizhi Technology and ZhiXiang Future—have advanced to unicorn status. According to reports from China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology News Network, as of 2024, cutting-edge technology companies account for 91.5% of the unicorn enterprise cohort, a significant increase from 56.4% in 2019.
